ACF Flood Relief Appeal 2024
Since the month of December 2023, there has been heavy rainfall in Sri Lanka resulting in severe flooding in several districts of Sri Lanka.
Over the last couple of weeks, Mullaitivu district & Mannar were continuing to face heavy rainfall and three remote villages there were badly affected. To date, hundreds of families had to be moved to common buildings such as schools & temples. One village was cut off and rescue work is ongoing.
In the first few days of January Batticaloa has been battling massive flooding. On the 4th of January ACF distributed dry rations to 180 displaced families, from 4 localities just outside Batticaloa. Due to the severity of the current conditions, the district emergency news bulletins have been alerting people regarding travel & other safety issues.
Today the need to help families in Batticaloa has drastically increased and nearly 2500 families are displaced … this figure was circulated by the Batticaloa District Office today.
Alongside the east of the country, Kilinochchi is currently at risk due to the opening of many flood gates at Iranaimadu Tank.
Our project partner in Batticaloa has confirmed that most villages are inaccessible for the next 24 – 48 hours.
The demand is great!! Essential food and other basic supplies are desperately needed to help the flood affected families.
